Merrie Monarch is a Hula festival that takes place in Historic Hilo. An event that was born in the years of 1963 with co-founders Dottie Thompson and George Na‘ope, honoring Hawaii’s last reigning King David Kalākaua.
How was the Nickname “Merrie Monarch” born? This nickname was created after Christian missionaries were banished in the years of eighteen hundred. Kalakaua, art lover battled to resuscitate sacred dance and artistic popularity and that’s how the nickname was born. A nickname that would be heard and know worldwide.
